Okay, but isn’t that the same when we talk about characters? We are overindulging in the amount of co-stars that are appearing as marquee names. Your protagonist does this cute little thing, but I just read that Character D does it too. New hairdo, new dress, new redo? Oops. So the Antagonist is supposed to kill…who? Oh, yeah… the spy, right? And that’s the  Protagonist, or is it? Did he/she do it, or did Character C, her twin sister, or Character M because he read the paper. No, I think I remember in chapter two that a merchant over on Daley street is the spy. He only dishes out soup to mislead you.  Well okay, you’ve won…I’m misread. Stick with you main characters, bring in those who are necessary and never-never put in Character V in the last chapter and tell me (the reader) that he’s the one that did it. Because even though you might have mention him on page two, I might have forgotten. Oh, he was the kid bending over, tying off the string on a stack of newspapers. Yeah,   NOT.

Have a Happy Writing Week.

Why? Because I get a lot more accomplished looking forward. I have a 2011 calendar on my desk with a word count on it for everyday that I wrote. I didn’t smile at the numbers. I spent too much time playing board member for my RWA chapter. My bad. If I had written a list at the start of last year, I’d be kicking myself for a poor ending. That 2011 calendar will now be applied to my taxes for proof of self-employment.

A fresh 2012 calendar has been cracked opened at January with a fresh year in front of me. So far I have recorded numbers on every day. That’s what I am hoping to do this year. I published at the end of 2011, so that monkey is off my back and I have the second book in that series being brush off, edited, rewritten, edited and critiqued to published ready and will go on sale this summer. That’s not a resolution. It’s a plan.

Writers plan. We work off of outlines. We build, we don’t resign to perform. But I will admit to one statement…I will finish Nanowrimo, just like I did in 2011.

Let’s welcome 2012 with a smile, stress free, fresh plan…I am.

I am amazed that 2011 is two short weeks from being given a fond farewell and 2012 will be welcomed. I am amazed by the amount of damage our government has done to our country in such a short amount of time. But, what I am really amazed about is that instead of maturing, our elected representatives both Senate and the House now conduct themselves like whiny little toddlers who haven’t learned to get along with others. Wow, what a wonderful world, yes?

I, on the other have a smile on my face because, before the end of the year, I will have an e-pub on Amazon, etc. Yes, Dani and the Lieutenant’s story will be published.

“Waiting” is the first of my three “DunMiller Mansion” Middle Grade/YA Paranormal that I’m working on getting out before the end of 2012. Not The End Of The World!

I found benefits as well as detriments. The presidency was one, a wonderful way to get to know your chapters members. You brush up on your organizational skills, you meet individuals that you probably wouldn’t and you become acquainted with all of RWA’s policies and feel a lot more comfortable with that knowledge. But, it also took a major chunk out of my writing time. Whine

I think our chapter is one of the best groups I’ve ever been a part of, which is why I ran for presidency. If I feel like I can make a difference or contribute healthily, I jump in with both legs. It was an experience that I enjoyed for the most part, and grew in. I think I’m a stronger person with more confidence. I’ve never been a wall flower, on the contrary…have mouth, tends to open it often… But, I feel like my questions, concerns and ideas are being taken to heart.

Now, I can apply what I’ve learned to strengthen my writing. And, I have oodles of time to accomplish this.

So, I’m making 2012 the year I finish three manuscripts begging for edits and query by tens. It is also the year, I will be publishing “Excuse Me.” I’ll keep everyone updated as I get the cover work done.

Until then, always keep an eye to possible characters. Observation is the invention of Characters!

I’ve been reading through my Donald Mass books and came across an appropriate statement, that I’d like to quote:

The Breakout Novelist; Intro.

“It’s especially important to recognize that your career does not happen due to agents who negotiate your deals, the editors who give you contracts, the publicists who arrange your tours, the bookstore buyers who order your books, or even because of your blog. Your career happens because of readers. They’re your customers. They’re your customers. They’re the ones paying you.”

I read a book, recently by a writer that I have always enjoyed her style, her stories but she’s change. She’s changed her style. Why? Unfortunately, I didn’t finish the book, I set it aside. Why, because I became disappointed with her changes. She didn’t slowly make her change so that this reader could accept the ‘subtle’ changes gradually. She didn’t wait for the replies from her readers regarding how they felt about these little changes. Instead… She did it all at once. I, the reader must not matter. If she writes for the money, the boat’s going to be up for sale.

I agree with Lady Antebella, It is your fans that make you famous. It’s the fans that make it so that you can buy a boat, or perform at the White House. Listen to your Fans – They Matter.

I’ve been doing a fine job. Been wearing a huge smile everyday. Until…yesterday. Yep, Saturday, I had to put my head in the sand. Naughty me. I only accomplished 1530. Yikes.

Now, I am behind. Only one week into the month and I am running with the catch-up game. I hate this, so…last night, I plotted, yep, plotted out what I want this chapter, today’s goal, to do. I’ve gotten to know my characters and feel that my new direction will run smoother.

“If you’ve never walked in a child’s shoes, you can’t understand their actions.”

“True.” She pushed her way past him. “If you don’t mind; she needs me.”

I’m past the first 10,000 words. Only 40,000 more to go (notice of observation…Since it snowed yesterday, I’ve found more energy for staying in.)

Are you kidding? It’s already here? Wow. I’ve just barely finished up last year’s draft.

But, this year, I intend to go all the way. Who ever stops at 45,000 words? Someone who doesn’t spend her time well. I needed to schedule m time better and, hopefully, this year, I have. Friends, relatives, neighbors have been alerted to the fact that my time is already accounted for and that they missed the list. Sounds cruel, but it is necessary. I write full-time but have noticed that there are days I’m shocked by how little I’ve actually sat down and written.

Writing…It is not answering e-mail. It is not twittering. It is not updating on Facebook. Blogging? Well, I will admit one does use their creative writing abilities. Blogging gives us the chance to take a few hundred words and educate other individuals on the goals of writing, or what other’s find dear to their hearts. I would think that blogging should be utilized as the best alternative to getting our writing jump-started during those mornings when we sit down to get our numbers in but come up frozen.

Blog. Blog about writing. Blog about what’s going on outside your window. Use flowery words to describe the color of the leaves that are slowly drifting to the ground. Then, get back to your goal for NaNo!

I’ve been pounding out ideas for my NANOWRIMO and have come up with some of the soppiest plans. Do I go Young Adult, Contemporary or do I start on something totally different? Perhaps a Middle Grade Adventure. Sure. Then I looked over at my back door and thought of another soppy plan. Replace the French doors with a regular door and a screen.

Can you say…stick with the manuscript.

I didn’t. We ordered a door from Pella that costs as much as a used car. Ridiculous - Yes! Piles of green bills passed from one hand to another. But, that is just the beginning. The set-up before the real contention begins. Ours was being told that the old door was odd sized. Okay, this may take some maneuvering, but as a young boy would tell you, easy ain’t fun. We need to remove the old, cut into the support beam, then patch around the wall on the sides. Do-able.

I can format the beginning, worry through the dusty middle, argue with the builder when he takes off a few days for an Elk hunt, a major conflict. Then hopefully wrap it up by bringing everything, walls, worlds together. Having my twelve-year-old help with the color choices and slopping on the final work was a real adventure. Carpet and paint are still not compatible.

Well, now that that’s done…I’m back to thinking about my November manuscript. Gee, why can’t it be as easy as hiring it out? Forgetabout it!  I love it. Good luck to all my fellow NaNo’s. See you at the end of November.
